It was expensive, but St. James thought a church of its size needed that kind of technology. Surprisingly, some board members were concerned about cost. That was solved when a computer programmer in the congregation volunteered to take care of all this new equipment and provide software support. It was his gift to the church. This gift saved a great deal of money. They also saved money, they thought, by cutting training. Since database work was viewed as “administrative,” it was felt that only two people in the church office needed training on the new congregation management software.

That is because we realized that teaching congregations about what they could do with technology and how it can ultimately aid the life of congregants, and then not providing them with the financial resources to implement technology, seemed cruel. Our ability to shift from pure teaching about computers and ministry to making grants for it came about due to the Lilly Endowment Inc. and its interest and generosity. Also, we felt that that instituting a grants program along with the training would make us the recipients of a wealth of information about how congregations use (and misuse) technology.

Those early networks usually had one very large (literally) computer connected to several display screens. And those were never color screens—just green or amber lettering appearing against a black background. Congregation management software (CMS) followed a similar development course. The earliest versions of CMS were not available until the 1970s. These were written only for installation on individual computers. Some of us remember the days of passing computer information from one machine to another on huge floppy disks.
