Cohan, of course, personified "Yankee Doodle" patriotism in the finales of his Little Johnny Jones of 1904 and George Washington, Jr. 41 Military plots encouraged plenty of crowd-pleasing action on stage and provided an opportunity to exploit a resurgent national pride through patriotic songs. The Shoo-Fly Regiment, with the one modification of presenting black soldiers, was modeled on this successful pattern. Rising nationalism in the United States at the end of the century was also unfortunately attended by increased hostility toward racial and ethnic minorities.

Dudley and the Smart Set Company in developing a new musical play in which he would have greater writing responsibilities. Sherman Houston Dudley was the same age as Jim Europe and, like Europe, considered himself a Washingtonian. Unlike Europe, however, Dudley had spent most of his life as a traveling showman, trouping around the South and West in various minstrel shows. 47 The Smart Set's theatrical vehicle for the 1906 season was a three act musical comedy written by Dudley and Steve B. Cassin, called The Black Politician, that included such proven popular devices as a Southern setting and a horse race.

Washington was then undergoing a rapid expansion and transformation in residential housing patterns, and there was a need for African-Americans in the field. 23 Class and status differences also became more clearly apparent. It was to one of these areas, the northwest section of the district centered on 7th Street north of M Street, that Henry Europe moved his family to embark on his new profession. W. was one of the most important transportation routes to and from the city for many years. 24 Closer to the center of the city lay a large commercial and residential area (known more recently as "Shaw").
