Bowlby, through discussions with Konrad Lorenz, Robert Hinde and Julian Huxley, became interested in the contribution that ethological studies could make to resolve this theoretical problem. Studies on imprinting3 – and particularly filial imprinting – and its biological function (protection and survival) were relevant. In 1954 the ethologist Robert Hinde began to attend regular meetings convened by Bowlby at the Tavistock Clinic. At some point he drew Bowlby’s attention to Harlow’s work with rhesus monkeys.

As a consequence of the pain and fright, the attachment system is reactivated and consequently he goes to his mother, crying and seeking comfort and assistance. We can then say that the accident has deactivated the child’s exploratory behaviour and activated his attachment behaviour. In a case like this, behavioural systems serve ‘set goals’. This denotes a time-limited event or an ongoing condition, either of which is brought about by specific and relevant conditions. As Bowlby (1969) put it, past discussions of instinctive behaviour have tended to concentrate on sequences that have a dramatic and time-limited outcome, such as orgasm, and to neglect behaviour that has an ongoing relationship outcome, such as distance regulation over a long period.

Attachment behaviour, because of its adaptive nature, can only function effectively within a social system and is part of it. Another characteristic of instinctive patterns is that they are usually linked together, so that co-ordination results in one form of behaviour. This is the case, for instance, with sex and attachment going together in mutual co-ordination. An important reference framework in Bowlby’s development of an instinct theory is the ‘theory of primary object clinging’, which proposed that there exists an inbuilt need to touch and cling to a human being, and that this need is on a par with the need for food and warmth.
