By Michael Moran

East of Java, west of Tahiti and north of the Cape York peninsula of Australia lie the unknown paradise islands of the Coral, Solomon and Bismarck Seas. They have been maybe the final inhabited position on the earth to be explored via Europeans, or even at the present time many stay mostly unspoilt, regardless of the previous presence of German, British or even Australian colonial rulers. Michael Moran, a veteran visitor, starts his trip at the island of Samarai, ancient gateway to the outdated British Protectorate, because the visitor of the benign grandson of a cannibal.

He explores the previous capitals of German New Guinea and headquarters of the disastrous New Guinea Compagnie, its directors decimated by way of malaria and homicide. He travels alongside the inaccessible Rai Coast during the Archipelago of Contented males, following within the footsteps of the nice Russian explorer 'Baron' Nikolai Miklouho-Maclay. The old anthropological paintings of Bronislaw Malinowski courses him during the seductive labyrinth of the Trobriand 'Islands of Love' and the erotic dances of the yam pageant. Darkly funny characters, either old and modern, spring vividly to existence because the writer steers the reader during the richly attention-grabbing cultures of Melanesia. 'Beyond the Coral Sea' is an enthralling voyage of bizarre brilliance and a memorable evocation of a sector which has been little written approximately prior to now century.

Before the Golden Gate and Bay Bridges were built in the 1930s, the only way to reach the city was by boat, unless you were arriving from the Peninsula down south. The Ferry Building is architecturally stunning, and was beautifully renovated in 2003. The Marketplace now houses cupcake bakeries, fishmongers, butchers, artisanal cheese makers, and a famous gourmet Vietnamese restaurant. A vast farmers’ market selling locally grown organic produce is held here three days a week, and the length of the building’s long, arched corridor brims with every food you’d ever want to sample.

A favorite lazy weekend pastime of mine is spending hours at City Lights browsing for a good book, grabbing a coffee, and finding a sunny spot to read in Washington Square Park, North Beach’s grassy community center. I like to linger, watching Chinese neighbors perform their daily tai chi, then wander up through the lush backyard gardens of the Filbert Street Steps (hopefully spotting some of the wild green parrots who live there) and on up to Coit Tower for the stunning panoramic view of the bay.
