We first came across the idea in a short article by Pat Curtis. (Curtis, 1983). The loving steps should be started before a child moves into her placement but will then go on being used, as should many bridging materials, during the first six months to a year of the child's placement. The message the child receives through the use of the loving steps is that the way she feels about her home or substitute home will change from time to time, especially during those months of settling in. 7 An example of'wall building'.

Donna used bright, primary colours, and there is a general liveliness to the painting: it has a lot of movement in it. It gives the impression of a coloured fountain or even a firework display. She had responded to what looked and felt like affection from some of her abusers. So, in her mind, affection could be something connected with behaving sexually? Then again, she both wanted male affection (the missing, lost, fatherly love) and yet was now rejecting anyone, male or female, who seemed to be getting emotionally close. She had already been hurt, as she expressed it, by affection. Her reactions were of course not thought out but were driven by unconscious as well as conscious factors, and sometimes by unexplainable repulsion.
