Iris freckles can be seen in up to 60 % of the population, whereas nevi are less common (4–6 %) [2]. Both iris freckles and nevi are more frequent in light-colored irides [2]. Patients with dysplastic nevus syndrome may have a tendency to develop iris nevi [3, 4]. Although an association between iris nevi and uveal melanomas has been reported [5], it is doubtful whether these two conditions are genuinely associated [2].

The meridian of insertion is selected according to the location of the tumor. The needle can be guided into the tumor either under indirect ophthalmoscopic control or using the operating microscope, depending upon surgeon’s preference [38].
