Our ultimate conviction is that everything we do is dignified and magnified by the fact that we were created for the glory of God. We were made for his glory, and this means that each one of us has a divine purpose. The Christian leader finds passion in the great truths of the Christian faith, and especially in the gospel of Jesus Christ. No one who has truly experienced the transforming and redeeming power of the gospel can think of life without passion. Leadership arises from this passion and is driven by it.

But knowledge alone is not everything. When the apostle Paul speaks of the superiority of love over all other good things, he informs us that knowledge will pass away (1 Corinthians 13:8). Knowledge must be accompanied by other commitments and capacities. Nevertheless, knowledge is fundamental. As a matter of fact, God once spoke of his people being “destroyed for lack of knowledge” (Hosea 4:6). That is a stern warning that should get the attention of every Christian leader. Contrast the priority of convictional intelligence with the models of leadership that are often found and even admired in some Christian circles.

This, like habit, is necessary, allowing us to operate in our daily lives. Linguists point out that we develop intellectual reflexes that are assigned even to single words. When you hear the word murder, you do not have to ask yourself consciously if this is a good thing or a bad thing. When you hear the word generous, you immediately draw a positive judgment. You could not get through a day, or even a single conversation, if you did not possess mental reflexes. The Christian leader must have mental reflexes that correspond to biblical truth.
