The banks of Otter Creek were bordered by a tow-path for barges traveling to and fro with the products of the farmers who stayed. The continuing prosperity of the town in the late 19th and early 20th centuries shows in the town hall, built in 1896, and the Bixby Library. The opera house is on the second floor of the city hall, and there are ambitious plans to keep its performance hall busy after the restorations are completed. The Bixby Memorial Free Library, a two-story brick Greek Revival building, was built in 1912.
The house is representative of Dorset in another way, too. The elaborate stenciling in the entrance hall was done by the premier modern stencil artist, Adele Bishop, a former Dorset resident and friend of a West descendant. ) Adele Bishop was one of several well-known artists and writers who made their summer (or year-round) homes in Dorset. This artistic tradition is still strong today, with several well-known artists living there-including the muralist Dean Fausett and the art historian Hendrik van Loon.
While farmhouses in Dorset took in summer guests weary of the city, the Mt. Aeolus Inn, across Page 7 from the railway station in East Dorset, put up salesmen and travelers breaking their train journey for the night. During Prohibition, the inn thrived as a stopping-off place for those who could afford to travel to Montreal to drink, and in those tonier days catered to the likes of Charles Lindbergh and Myrna Loy.
