There is the suggestion—again, only from Cantwell’s remembrance—that the friendship between Alvarito and Renata might one day lead them to marry, a prospect that does not displease Cantwell. It may be Alvarito whom Renata has in mind when she tells Cantwell that if she were going to have a baby she would have to marry someone; he is a baron, and she is a countess.
