And we were also brought up in a Christian environment, we’re Catholic and what interested me in this was that from the very beginning the fact that we sing a lot in church, and in my family everyone sings. And my father, he is a primary teacher, but he also plays the organ. He plays the organ in church. The tomb of my parents is in Ambalavao. I started music when I was five, when my father was telling us stories every night. He was telling tales before we fell asleep but, at the same time, he was playing the guitar.

Especially in literature emerging from the virtual world of technological globalization and networking, the distinction between a transnational or a translocal network is largely irrelevant since it does not capture any material distinction: both exist simultaneously. A reference to translocality foregrounds the multiplicity of local nodes in a virtual and, at the same time, potentially global system of interconnections. In virtual networks where no actual material movements across geopolitical borders are involved, the national easily loses its identificatory strength and point of reference.

We therefore propose a more materially grounded distinction, restricting the translocal to those physical or symbolic movements that remain within national boundaries, and referencing as transnational those that transcend them. The advantage of this distinction will become obvious when we discuss translocal and transnational capital. In the Introduction we introduced the concept of transcultural capital as the combination and interaction of cultural, social and economic capital. In this chapter we want to highlight its translocal specificities within the country of origin.
