In thermoset molding, the use of hollow sprues (hollow cone molding) can result in large cycle time reductions. PRETOUGHENED STEELS The majority of injection molds used nowadays are manufactured from nickel-chrome alloyed steels which are subsequently heat, and/or surface, treated in order to obtain a surface hardness ranging from 48 to 67 Rockwell C. Such a hardness is used to prevent damage occurring to the mold surfaces, to obtain a good surface finish and, to increase stability/life usage of the mold.
Use of this technique ensures that minimal contamination occurs during the regranulation operation. The rubbery nature of EVA should be considered when designing the ejection system. Ejection of thin walled and cylindrical components should be carried out using stripper plates, rings or a sleeve so as to maximize the available surface area on the cavity or core. Wherever possible, apply a matt surface to the core by vapor, or shot blasting so as to enable ease of ejection. Draft angles of between 2 to 5 degrees per side are recommended.
Post-molding shrinkage occurs after the molding has been aged and is also called environmental shrinkage. To obtain values for mold shrinkage, components are produced by an appropriate molding method: compression molding for thermosets and injection molding for thermoplastics materials. After a specified time (eg 2h) the dimensions of the molding are measured at room temperature and the dimensions of the cavity, if not known, are also measured. The mold shrinkage (MS) is given as a percentage by 100 x Lo- L1/ Lo where Lois the length of the cavity and L1 is the length of the molding.
