Take the time to try several options to determine which one works best. Be aware that joined motifs may look somewhat different from their unattached siblings, especially at the corners. An unattached shape does not have any outside forces acting on it, so it remains in its original form. Once you add additional shapes, depending on the joining method and how much force it exerts on the motif — pulling it toward other motifs — you may see that the motif changes shape. The connected motifs here were adapted from Motif 14 (page 66) to fit better alongside each other.
Stitch and connect at least five or six motifs, fastening off the final round but leaving the tail longer than usual and not woven in. Study the connected motifs to see if you need adjustments to make the pieces fit more comfortably. Corners may be made longer with taller stitches or added chains. Sides may be flattened out by placing shorter stitches in the center of the side and taller stitches toward the corners. Joining methods may be chosen for their height — double crochet join versus flat join, for example — to make the pieces fit together nicely.
SINGLE CROCHET Insert the hook into the first stitch and pull up a loop, yarn over, and pull through 2 loops on hook. DOUBLE CROCHET Make a yarn over before inserting the hook, and then proceed as you would for an ordinary double crochet stitch. With this method, you’ll end up with a small knot just to the side of the first stitch; either hide it on the wrong side when weaving in your ends, or unknot it after you’ve joined the round. Without slip knot Wrap the yarn around the hook from back to front to simulate a slip knot and any initial yarnovers: two times for single crochet, three for double crochet, and four for treble.
